If you’ve been to Boston Logan International Airport lately, you’ve probably noticed that it’s undergoing some major changes. Massport announced a five-year, $2 billion plan to modernize Logan airport. In the last five years, Logan has gone from 30 million passengers in 2013 to 40.9 million in 2018. This growth has taxed the aging airport, most of whose terminals were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Here’s what to expect:

Terminal C Optimization and B to C Connector: Fall 2021

13 million of Logan’s nearly 41 million passengers came through Terminal C, which was built in 1967 when the entire airport only served 7.7 million travelers. The goal for terminal C is to make the passenger experience easier and more pleasant.

Terminal C will have consolidated security, new and improved facilities, renovated public spaces, and better amenities. In addition, Terminal C will have a post-security connection to Terminal B.

Terminal B to C Roadway Improvements: Summer 2022

Increased passenger numbers have caused gridlock and congestion, and this project will remake the terminal roadways to alleviate traffic.

Massport’s Terminal B to C Roadways project will revamp the terminal area roads to eliminate backups and get passengers through the airport more quickly. Terminal C in particular will have more curb space to reduce congestion. The goal of this project is to improve traffic flow and increase passenger safety.

Terminal E Modernization: Spring 2023

Terminal E, Logan’s international terminal, offers flights to 56 destinations worldwide, with 26 of those destinations having been added just since 2012. Despite the growth of services, Terminal E the same number of gates since it was built in 1974.

The modernization plan will expand the building by 400,000 square feet, add seven new gates, and add eight new TSA security lanes. Other improvements will include a more convenient Customs facility and better baggage carousels.

The goal for this plan is a terminal that exceeds Massachusetts Energy Code requirements by 20% and that is built with sustainability at the forefront.

These enhancements will undoubtedly make the experience of flying in and out of Boston more pleasant and enjoyable, but expect some growing pains during the construction phase. In anticipation of increased traffic, Massport has just implemented new rules for rideshare companies, who can no longer drop off or pick up customers at the terminals.
