We go big for Independence Day in New England—no surprise, since so much of our nation’s early history is tied to this region of the country. With July 4th on a Thursday this year, some of you may be lucky enough to have a four-day weekend! Plan now to take advantage of one of the best 4th of July celebrations in New England.

Boston

Boston’s Harborfest, the largest Fourth of July celebration in the country, runs from July 1-7, 2019. Even before the 4th, there are lots of fun events, like Chowderfest and the Parade of Lights boat promenade. Live music, arts and crafts, food, and cultural events are offered all week.

At 8:00 p.m. on July 4th, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular begins. This beloved Boston tradition features the Pops concert followed by a fantastic fireworks show on the banks of the Charles River. You’ll hear a rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with real cannons and the ringing of church bells. It’s free to the public, but expect huge crowds!

Bristol, RI

From the largest to the oldest: Bristol, Rhode Island’s July 4th event started in 1785 and has the distinction of being the longest-running Independence Day celebration in the country. Events start in the weeks leading up with free outdoor concerts at Independence Park, Orange Crate Derby races, a firefighters’ muster, Fourth of July Ball, Drum & Bugle Corps Show, and many other activities and events. On July 4th, the Military, Civic and Firemen’s Parade is viewed by over 200,000 people from Rhode Island and worldwide.

Portsmouth, NH

On July 3rd, Portsmouth—one of our favorite New England cities!—will host its fireworks show at South Mill Pond at 9:15 p.m.

Strawberry Banke has an old-fashioned Fourth, starting with a naturalization ceremony at 11:00 a.m. The day’s activities include a children’s bike and wagon parade and a classic Field Day with croquet, marbles, hula hoops, and many other games.

Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor has an award-winning July 4th celebration in one of the prettiest places in New England. The day starts with a blueberry pancake breakfast and also features relay races, a parade, and a seafood festival. In the evening, the festivities include harborside concerts and fireworks.
